Because he's counter culture. He's politically incorrect, and flusters the jimmies of the new industry, the tech industry, and the college industry, which, up to this point (and, looking at the Google memo, arguably still today) has a stranglehold on culture, and are about as tolerant of different opinions as the Puritans.

after decades of being sold out by damn near every elected official while they smile and lie that it's really going to beneficial, it's rather refreshing to see one have achieved what many of us feared was no longer even possible. your question is like asking "why does everyone like not being taken advantage of, not being cheated, being supported and encouraged, and having some semblance of hope for their & their kids' futures?"
