I spent most of my childhood and teenage years alone, so I've got no idea how to read social queues etc..

You will improve quickly and naturally as you put yourself in social situations. The point is not to avoid them.

Humans are social creatures; we're designed to pick up on these social signals quite naturally.

The book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is a classic suggestion for those hoping to improve their people skills. It's free online and you can probably read it in a few days if you devote a few hours per day. It helped me when I was younger.
