I used to think I had depression, but now I'm starting to think everyone is depressed and that none of my problems are special just the same things everyone else has to go through. Is everyone secretly miserable?

Yes, but in their own way

It's not a case of being in a constant state of just one emotion. People's emotions are constantly changing, someone miserable today may be elated tomorrow. The thing that differs most is what it takes to make that persons emotions change, I can go from egotistical megalomaniac to depressed bitch boy in an instant if I were to drop a sandwich I was enjoying.

What are your problems?
>>
>>18591419
Yes and no. Everyone feels inadequate as they struggle to actualize the "inner" Self (We're never good enough, secure enough, etc.).
However there are people who are clearly happier than others, so relatively speaking there are miserable people and less miserable people.

Everyone has problems, you're right. Neurologically speaking, depression hasn't been isolated and identified as a disease in the same way that schizophrenia and bipolar 1 both have. It's possible that depression is just a state normal brains fall into. The jury is out on this one. I think your perspective sounds fairly balanced and reasonable.

Constant anxiety and obsessive thoughts which leads to me feeling emotionally drained and in a frequent low mood.

Neuroscience student here.
Although true it is not yet as clear cut as those other illesses, it would be wrong to say there is no neurological basis.

Statistically depressed people tend to have reduced volume in PFC, so do children with families with history of depression.
