Pick out something that they overtly take pride in and use that as a conversation point. Something like an interesting tattoo they have, sports team jersey they're wearing, book they're reading, music they're listening to, their car, pet etc. Always get them to elaborate (keep potential who/what/when/where/why questions in your head to keep the conversation moving). Eventually you'll find some things you have in common yo form a friendship off of.
