instead of trying to some big purchase, why don't you satiate your self with a whole bunch of little things.
tired of how you can't sleep in cuz the light in your room? buy some nice curtains. not a fan of your bed? buy a memory foam topper. wan't an a/c in your room? buy that. invest in a video game system, new or old, and a few games. new rug?
go to etsy and type in some of your favorite things (for instance, I went and typed in 'majoras mask') and see what pops up. i found some great paintings and ended up buying out the guys entire shop, his original works are even better than his majoras.

get the good stuff too. Also I'd set aside enough for ~6 months of living if you don't have that already.

The simplest rule is this: You should as soon as possible have enough money in a bank account to live on for six months.
To do that, set up a budget. Figure out how much you need to live on between checks, and put that much aside. Add on any larger purchases (clothes, etc) you want to make before your next check. Throw in half of what's left, "just in case". This is your "To be used savings"
Put the rest in the bank as your "Not to be Used" savings.
When you accumulate 6 months worth, you can begin to think about stocks, mutual funds and other investments.
