How do you get into a good college without being a megachad/megastacy with 8 extracurriculars...
Don't be useless.

First of all, a meganerd is more likely to get into a good college, because presumably he'll have better grades.
Top-tier colleges presume good grades and good SAT/ACTs. They then look for interestingness. They want the student body to be made up of people who will stimulate each other.
An impressive record in 1 or 2 extracurriculars will count more than a long list of clubs you did nothing in. Club officer, leader of a fund drive, organizer of a peer tutoring service, etc.
Interesting combinations will catch the eye of the admissions people - a math major who acted in drama club shows, a jock who worked with neighborhood kids, etc.
Social popularity in high school terms - being one of the cool kids - counts very little

There are decent community colleges with acceptance rates above 90%. Just make sure you learn a trade while you're there because humanities are practically dead and you want to be useful at the end of it. If you graduate with good scores and try to participate in extra curricular you could go on to a more exclusive place for graduate school if that's what you need, but most people don't "need" that. Most important thing, worth restating, learn a trade and become a useful adult. If that isn't what you're doing you're doing it wrong.
