Because faggot is one of the most multifaceted insults when it's used in a non-homosexual context. Anyone can be a faggot or act like a faggot. It's not exclusive to the gays although there are people who use it that way. Newfags, oldfags, tallfags, mexifags, stormfags, and the list goes on.
It just rolls off the tongue perfectly.

The word nigger can be used similarly in that a low person of any race can be described as one (snowniggers, etc.) although I think more often than not there's been a more serious tone behind it seeing as how much more conservative this website has become over the past few years.
