About a week ago I applied for a credit card. I just got in the mail today that I've been denied for various reasons that they cant tell me, although they did list a few things they could, of which I don't understand. That said, I noticed that they also gave me a credit score. Why do I have one even though I don't own a credit card, and what do I do to build it? It's 576, if that matters.
Have you ever borrowed money?

pay your bills on time. register on https://www.creditkarma.com/auth/logon/ and check your credit report on there. it'll show stuff like loans you have and any open credit cards. maybe your parents opened one in your name or something.

Nothing? No student loans, nothing?

Student loans, yes. I forgot about that.

That might have something to do with why you have a credit score.

Most of the people I know have gotten a discover card as their first credit card.. Another option for someone with no or little credit is a secured card.
Oh, and if you want a credit card, go and talk to your bank. They're more likely to give you one since it's a quick sale and they make a fair bit of money off them.

Yeah, I agree. I forgot about that, honestly. I don't start payments for a little longer.

It was an amazon card, and since I have Chase, they seemed to be tied together.

I got denied for that card after 1 year having a credit card account open and a credit score of ~720. After that I applied for a chase freedom card and got accepted.

Yes. College wasn't working out for me. I have a part-time job right now to sort my shit out before I go back.

I'll look into it, thanks.
