I want to learn to sing but I have a very throaty/crackly voice. People tell me I sound like I smoke a lot (I don't)
I just downloaded this "singing for dummies" book. If anyone here sings can you give me advice, things you wished you'd known etc etc
Also I cannot afford a voice teacher, I barely make my uni payments
Just learn Tom Waits songs. His voice sounds like gravel and it's great

get a vocal coach or at least consult someone who sings classically. you probably vocalize "improperly" and don't know how to sing.

Sing the blues then
singing improperly damages your voice. after a while all you'll be able to sing is blues. heavy metal/hard rock and hardcore vocalists sometimes need to go to the doctors for damaging their vocal cords.

Listen to an early Neil Diamond record and a recent one. He's lost his voice, but he still talk-sings very effectively.
Or look at some videos of Sinatra post 1990, when he had a range of about 3 notes.
