my external hard drive used solely for hoarding media isnt displaying any files when i open it up but shows that ~900gb is in use.
chkdsk has been running for 30 hours but i still havent gotten past stage 1. not optimistic for its finish
i have a spare 1tb drive and am hoping i can somehow move all the bad data over before the drive completely dies and try to salvage what i can, but not sure if its possible?
pls advise

I'm sure they will know how to help you. Either that or just tell you to install Ubuntu.
Try to read after the damaged area, skip ahead 10% and see if it works.
Try to copy the entire disk from bad disk to new disk. No chkdsk. Use dcfldd to copy it. If it gets stuck at that same 6% mark copy the later stuff first. Do copy it to the corresponding location on the new disk. (skip both input and output the same amount. Should take about seven hours to read the data.
You can try to put the drive in the freezer to keep it cool, (while it runs and reads, it is a hassle but might be worth it).
