The hymen actually isn't what causes you to bleed since it's just a piece of skin. It's from you not having anything bigger than a finger or tampon up there. So sex was probably abrasive for you since you are tight and probably tense from being nervous. That causes the vaginal walls to tear.

I used to bleed when the first couple times i had intercourse. My body just wasn't used to the change and I still, from time-to-time, bleed during sex because I break a blood vessel or something. As long as the bleeding is heavy and prolonged, you should be fine! Maybe try some sort of lubricant to help ease-off on the friction so you don't bleed while your body adjusts. :-)
