Why does hate/disagreement affect me so much more than praise and why is it so much easier to (properly) reply to?

You're only human, our minds are predisposed to respond actively to negativity.
Try generating some positive momentum so you start to feel better in yourself. That way your self-esteem could become an echo-chamber that keeps you happy.

I'm trying to do that now actually by improving my surroundings and myself, it's helping. Though I have another problem related to this. I tend to put less effort into things where I'm not motivated by anger or other negative emotions. I can write essays about a topic that gets me steamed but it's hard to really communicate with kind and agreeable people as well as I'd like to, I just don't seem to put the effort in as much.
How fix?
