You can read a pointless book and the "world passes you by". It is questionable what you really miss by letting "the world pass you by". Since both wishing to stop negative thoughts and gain positive thoughts are in themselves thoughts arising in awareness; you can never stop the flow of thoughts.

What you need to do is identify with the awareness of the thought, instead of the thought itself. Like watching a movie play in front of you, without interacting with it.
Since all thoughts both positive and negative are just projections of your own mind, simply watch them go by as if you are in a dream.
