Like I said, play it by ear. You can't tell how things are going to play out in advance. You could have excellent conversation going and not talk to anyone else, or you could sit there in awkward silence until one of you makes an excuse to go and talk to someone else. Who knows?

I thought the same thing, but I've talked to a few guys about this recently and all of them said that it's weird for girls to ask first because it establishes a weird dynamic.
