she probably didnt actually believe what she said. when people are confused about why they feel some way they will make up reasons. its not on purpose, its literally what the brain does to rationalize its own behaviors to you.

if you cut your brain directly down the center you will have two brings that operate independently, each controlling half your body. if someone asks you to pick up an object that is your favorite color, each hand will pick up a different object. your two brains cannot communicate and argue over which color is the favorite, so each one chose a different one. now the part of your brain that controls speech will make up a story, something like 'i meant to grab the blue one but accidentally went for the red one first'. or 'red used to be my favorite, but the blue one looked really nice...'

something to that effect. we do the same thing even with our brain attached. me, i make up excuses about 3 months in. suddenly im depressed and uncomfortable and i dont understand why.
