Almost this. Deal with each problem on a case-by-case basis. When he whines about X, confront him on it and tell him why it's not something he gets to whine about. When he whines about Y, do the same thing. Rinse and repeat until all issues are dealt with. If he goes back to whining about something you've already covered, move out or kick him out.

OP returns, sorry for disappearing. He's not depressed, we live in a major city and I think we all have quite high-stress environments, but I get the fuck on with it and he seems to kick up a fuss at the smallest things. He's also hugely possessive of the flat, despite the fact that we moved in at the same time, so it's "our" flat. He refers to things as "my" this, "my" that. Even told me I couldn't move a sofa (which I own) because he didn't want "his" living room to change.
