I've recently discovered that I'm not only not as smart as I thought I was, I'm pretty stupid.
How do I cope?

by learning.

But I can't remember anything I learn

then realize that if you literally cannot remember stuff then its not really your fault and delude your self into thinking you are just tragically cursed to be dumb instead of taking actions to improve your self.
Focus on the task at hand. Really focus. Stop spacing out, listen to conversations, listen to the news, pay attention. Be present. Get off of autopilot. Stimulate your brain. Take time to challenge it, with both abstract and concrete ideas. Learn. Watching documentaires and TED talks really helps. Once you find something that imintrigues or inspires you, take time to do more research.

Memorization does not equate to knowledge. The best way to learn and remember things is to take the time to fully understand it.
Being smart takes discipline. It's no cake walk.
Learn a trade or get a hobby. Become skillful in something you like. Having knowledge in something that most people in the world are clueless about will make you feel like you have some self worth and a leg up among common folk. You don't need to be smart for this.
Most "smart" people are just people who've put a lot of time into a certain field, out of passion or discipline.

Remembering things that don't interest you is really hard. For pretty much everyone. Anybody who says otherwise is either lying, or interested in everything. You probably have something that you know a ton about. I have a friend, dumb as bricks, he could tell you every song pink floyd played at specific concerts at specific years. Because he thought it was interesting. Find your passion(or passions), and everything else, just admit it. You don't know much about it, and it doesn't interest you.
Now some people are better at realizing when certain decisions they're about to make are a bad idea, and this is what I would refer to as actual intelligence. Dumb people can know a bunch of really great information, and then go drunk driving because they're stupid as shit. If you fall into this category then all I can say is train yourself to take more time making decisions, or find someone who you can run important life decisions past.
