I try to convince myself to suck it up, enroll, and study my ass off to feel like I deserved it. But I'm just so vehemently against affirmative action that I feel like if I take advantage of this kind of opportunity I'd feel like a hypocrite for the rest of myself. It may sound cliche, but dignity is very important to me. I'm not like those "brown pride, la raza“ Hispanics who identify solely by the color of their skin. To me it's ignorant to be proud of anything you didn't personally accomplish/help accomplish, and I don't know if the quality of the education balances out being surrounded by these entitled minorities who'll see me as one of them.

From my perspective it comes down to what will you regret more. Taking advantage of a system you don't believe in, or missing a good schooling opportunity? I understand wanting to feel like you earned what you have, but sometimes it's good to accept help. If you do think you will be able to put forth the effort to make it, then you will be earning it really. As far as the people go I can't really say much. I would just tell you to find friends who don't fall into that category at school, but I was never really good with social situations in college.

Yes, that's how it goes. I was in the same situation. It's not going to change because you don't take advantage of the opportunity. Leaving the university isn't going to make them replace you with some white kid who deserves it more. For all you know, they'll replace you with a different non white person. I don't think it's right that it happens, but I'm not going to give up my spot just so that they can give it to someone else like me who isn't me.

Like I said in OP, I got into another school on the other coast that's almost as good and hasn't made me feel like a token. But I've lived my whole life on the west coast and it'd be a huge change to accept that other offer, although I'm seriously considering it. I'm basically trying to decide if the convenience of going to my first choice is worth feeling out of place.

I know this sounds like a typical "first world problem", but i appreciate the responses regardless.

I know where you're coming from OP. I want to succeed on my own merits as a scientist, not as a minority. I try to remind myself of all of the amazing things I've accomplished, and the truth is I do deserve to be where I am, regardless of whether or not I needed the help of a special selection process.

Also, I don't think these kinds of "programs" are bad. The way they are supposed to work is if two candidates are equally qualified, they should admit the minority student. Racism and sexism are not uncommon in STEM, and so this is an attempt to combat that, along with the years of oppression these groups have faced. I haven't personally met any minorities that don't deserve to be where they ended up because of something like this. I'm sure there are some, obviously, but I don't think it's as common as most believe. Make the most of this opportunity, and at the end of the day even if being a minority is the only reason you were admitted initially, in the future it will be because you are a an accomplished scientist.
