Well you obviously have to either try and change him or break up. You don't "deal with the pain", there's a real issue there and trying to cope with it instead of fixing it is a terrible idea.

Have a serious talk with him about it, tell him that he's fucking up his health and potentially his career and social life in the long term. And tell him how you feel about it. Don't try to pull any punches, be honest and straight forward. Tell him that he NEEDS to change. And keep reminding him. Support him, but don't let him get away with his addiction. Try to make him understand that he has an issue. Also try to get his family and friends (those who aren't alcoholic at least) involved. Tell them that you're worried about him and that he needs help.

There are things you can do to try and help him, but at the end of the day it's on him. If he doesn't want to change he won't no matter what you do. You try to do it, talk to him, support him. But if he doesn't show any changes or at least willingness to change give him an ultimatum. Tell him that you can't leave with him as he is and that you'll leave if he doesn't change. And if he doesn't then leave. Yeah, I know, you love him and all that, but if this goes on you'll only going to get more miserable.

Also stop going to /soc/.
