Learn Japanese if you want to actually have a decent convo with them. Most know a little English but can be hard to communicated without looking like a dickhead/idiot. Learn Japanese and don't be too fat are my tips.

Half true. I know too many relationships that started with a harsh language barrier when I studied in Japan.

It's not that they don't like foreigners, it's that most of them are too nervous to speak english to foreigners. At least that's my understanding.
