How do I fight when I have no idea how to fight and have never

You don't, that's called taking a beating.

I'm no fighter, but I would think that getting someone to train you in fighting would be a good idea. Some sort of martial arts maybe? Good to start when you are young, because to become decent takes a long time.

Never fought.. Well, If you want to sustain minimal damage, known as winning, you need to fight dirty. Knock out or disable your opponent immediately. If you feel you can not swing an ax at your opponent then you do now want to fight, you want to wrestle (gay foreplay).
In a fight your objective is to maim or kill. That is the only way to subdue an attacker safely. I suggest you get a concealed carry license. Being armed is much safer since you do not have to let the opponent near you.

How about don't? If you have no idea what you're doing, the chances are that you'll just get the shit kicked out of you. Fighting is more dangerous than people realize. One solid hit in the head is enough to cause permanent brain damage and a good kick in the stomach could easily rupture organs and land you in ICU. If you have no idea how to take a hit or how to land one, just avoid fighting altogether, unless you have no sense of self-preservation.

It depends on your skill. If you are a know nothing bitch palm strikes and the headbutt work good. (look up bas rutten barfight videos) if you are mildly athletic learn basic boxing stance and practice jab cross. If thats nit enough, look and practice the rear naked choke and the guillotine choke. Practice with a friend. I am an amateur mma fighter if it matters.
