My wife's mom finally died and I want to built a replica of Blockbuster in her bedroom.

Would it be in bad taste? I haven't told the wife yet, and also, how would I go about building it?

Kek'd audibly at this question.
Anyway, you'll just have to ask your wife how she feels about this, and go from there.

I always liked the idea of having things in my home that don't typically go in a home, like store or restaurant displays.

I have a pinball machine in my home and it's p sweet.

Who the FUCK would buy business-class hardware for home-based networking? You are literally paying way more than you need to.

100 dollars for the Fujitsu and 250 for the Dell. Find me a consumer desktop with 48 gigabytes of RAM and 2 8 core Xeons for 100 dollars.
The only gripe I have with it is it uses 100 more watts than my 800 dollar custom built AMD server. That, and they're loud as fuck but that doesn't matter if they're in another room.
>>
>>18268944
What are you using this for? Home media server? And I was more focused on the Cisco Catalyst but still

Ebay.
Small disclaimer, they usually don't come with rails and most of the time they only come with 2 drive caddies. If you wait long enough you MIGHT be able to find one for cheap that has all the caddies and the second power supply. I actually had to buy a second SAS cable for the Fujitsu to use more than 4 drives in it.

If I had better electricity here I'd buy this one. Looks like it comes with 13 drive caddies and both power supplies.

Metasploit lab/RADIUS server/file server/torrent downloader/DHCP server/DNS server/Active Directory server (because Hyper V is retarded and requires a domain to have SMB3 hosted VHDs)/OpenVPN server (for while I'm out of the house or at work)/OpenSSH server/etc.
Pic related is the Fujitsu. I'm currently setting up Active Directory on a different server, and I'll move all the other virtual machines off the Dell and reinstall it when I get the domain up and running.
After I got a Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone Black, 2 PC Engines APUs, and a couple thin clients I realized that it's cheaper and less work to just buy a server and virtualize all that shit.

Be sure to get an old Blockbuster employee shirt on ebay first, and then start working on the room without telling your wife. When she walks in on you putting it together, just tell her "Sorry ma'am, we're not open yet."

Interesting. Keep up the good work, anon. Although, it just seems like some of those things (DHCP Server/DNS Server) are there just to to have it. I would have let the router handle with that shit, unless AD required those roles to be installed on a server. Surprised you don't have a backup server. But all in all, this looks like a really cool project, something I look forward to later in my career. Thanks for the show, Anon.
>>
>>18269752
>backup server
All 3 of the servers (Dell, Fujitsu, custom built) have large ZFS shares that are synchronized. I know it's not a "backup," but I scrub then all once a week and keep an eye on it so I'm not all that worried about it. I'd like to get a tape drive but that shit is expensive as hell, even used.
As far as DHCP and DNS, I got pissed off one day when my sister brought her retarded friends over and porn showed up on iknowwhatyoudownload.com so I basically redid the entire network with a private and guest network. The guest network is separate and everything gets logged, which the shitty router either can't do with DNS requests or doesn't let me send it to my log server. Besides all that, it's fun to play with this shit, and I don't want to become like my useless coworker and just fall behind.

None of those services warrants that much RAM or CPU. You are either retarded or trolling.
>>
>>18270359
The server came with those CPUs. RAM is usually the bottleneck for virtualization. Before I stripped down the kernel for my Linux guests they wouldn't boot without 512 MB of RAM allocated.
The file server uses ZFS, so more RAM is more performance. The DHCP, AD, and DNS servers will probably be moved to Windows Server guests since Linux integration with AD is a pain.
>implying 48 gigabytes of RAM is a lot
If I make a Chromium virtual machine I'd probably give it 16 gigabytes since it eats so much. My old desktop had trouble running Starcraft 2 and Chrome at the same time and it had 16 gigabytes.
>>

>implying 48 gigabytes of RAM is a lot
It depends on what you are doing. Given what you listed, 48 gigabytes is too much. It costs money to supply power to RAM. If they aren't active, they are still powered on.

>Before I stripped down the kernel for my Linux guests they wouldn't boot without 512 MB of RAM allocated.
What distribution won't boot without 512 of RAM allocated?

>The file server uses ZFS, so more RAM is more performance
Why even use ZFS?

>If I make a Chromium virtual machine I'd probably give it 16 gigabytes since it eats so much. My old desktop had trouble running Starcraft 2 and Chrome at the same time and it had 16 gigabytes.
Chrome OS != Chrome Browser
>>

>What distribution won't boot without 512 of RAM allocated?
The Hyper V kernel drivers eat RAM.
>Why even use ZFS?
Data integrity. The performance is decent, too.
>Chrome OS != Chrome Browser
Chromium as in Linux with the Chromium web browser so I can remote into that for web browsing instead of running it on my laptop or running it in a virtual machine on my laptop.
I can't see the RAM modules using much more than a couple watts per stick, which is still less than running dedicated machines if I run out. It came with 48 gigabytes, so it's not like it's hard to take it out if I'm not using it. The alternative would be to buy one (for about the same price anyways) and buy more RAM if I run out, which when shipping is added in would have made the server cost a lot more overall.
