Public Transportation.
If you can't afford Uber, try Lyft.

My friend was telling me she has an Uber subscription in LA and I forget what she said she pays but it was way less than what I pay for gas ($30-$40 a week).

As a Formula Drift Pro2 licence holder I do not understand this fear at all.
Get something ridiculously slow like a automatic geo metro.

If I'm in the wrong lane for 10 seconds, I'll end up going the complete wrong direction and likely get lost. I have to watch all the signs while also watching directly in front of me, and all the other lanes so I don't run into someone, all while moving at 80 miles per hour in a giant hunk of metal.
i had the same issue, still sort of do
but find a better driving instructor, use a friend and ask for as clear and simplified feedback as possible
it worked wonders for me
