I teach English at multiple schools. There's one school I dislike due to rude staff. I teach there once a week. Well, I received a complaint from the principle about not being enthusiastic enough during class.

These schools are all under one board of education. While I give 4/5 weekdays my all at other schools, this is the only one where I feel like shit and thus act accordingly.

So, what can I do? Do I just kiss ass and pretend like it's the best position ever? I think I have too much pride. The other schools are great.

Bonus notes: I've taught at this board of education for 6 years. It's my first year attending this bad school. I don't want to lose my job all together, I guess.

Growing up it was always nice when the teacher was enthusiastic and engaged in the material they were teaching. Students can tell when a teacher doesn't give a fuck and its rubs off on them. Must suck working with shitheads but your actions have the biggest impact on the students not on them. As a result I think you should see past the other workers and realize what you're there for.

Thanks for your input. I do understand the students have nothing to do with it, so it affects them negatively. I think I just need some way to see past the difficulties I face with the staff. For instance, I'll teach in a certain way and I'll get feedback saying to do it differently. I try to meet the expectations the school wants, then they tell me it's still not right.

In these six years, I've not had one complaint until today and I am a certified teacher who feels confident in the lessons I deliver.

I'm another anon. When I was growing up, it never occurred to me that teachers had an actual job, I just thought they were there to help me learn and grow. I knew they had outside lives and were real people, but I never for some reason suspected teaching was an actual job (as a kid).

Perhaps many kids think like me. Other anon is right, if you have a teacher in a shitty mood, it'll rub off onto the students.

Just be there to teach and guide them, and remember it isn't the students' fault for anything. If anything, they're on YOUR side

Thanks for replying.

My plan is to be my normal self for the students next time I work there (5 days from now).

Is it kissing ass to abide by the school staff's orders, and all round bitterness though? That's what irks me most. Maybe that's what comes with the position of "teacher". Until I'm qualified to be in a higher position.

I'm pug anon

I'm not sure what expectations they have placed for you or how unreasonable they are but it might help to vent some of these frustrations with someone at the school. When both parties are bitter and refuse to give an inch, nothing seems to get done. It is entirely possible that they are being unreasonable but making an effort is better than nothing.

I don't think it is kissing ass unless you believe you are compromising yourself in some aspect. As a general rule I don't think adopting bitterness is a sound approach to any situation. Make the best out of what you can control and dont sweat what you can't.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

Wouldn't it be swell if an English teacher knew the difference between PRINCIPLE and PRINCIPAL?
