You are right to a degree anon. You are encouraging those that are opportunistic of your passivity if you don't punish their behavior but at the same time you have to be tactful regarding your assertive actions.
Gauge your opponent and the risk vs reward of these actions and go with what's best. Sometimes a strong response even if you are the superior opponent can cause you more ill than good.
