I've been to cafes where you order at the counter, ones where you sit down somewhere and a waitress gets your order and ones where you walk through, pick pastries, then go to the counter.

Only the fancier places have waitress/waiters, so you'd know. Most places you go up to the counter

Nothing wrong with going up to an employee and asking. Think about this: all the cafe wants is to turn a profit. All the employee wants is to get his salary by serving people. By going up and asking, you're giving both the cafe and the employee means to their ends.

Asking another customer is a solution too. Not that they give a fuck about a 5 second interruption. It's completely normal not to know how an establishment works, anon.

Pick an empty place at odd hours. Sit down near counter. Then yell your choice as loud as you can.
