How do references work exactly? My supervisor had given me permission to put her as a reference for whatever future job I go for, but this was about 6 months ago. I haven't seen her since. I'm applying for a new job, and I'm wondering if they actually end up calling these references or not. Also should I be giving her a heads up that someone might be calling? Is that weird?

Yea they will call her just give her a heads up.
ive applied for a lot of jobs in my six years but not a single one of them ever called my references, and I had literal celebrities listed.

Which celebrities?
Lindsey Lohan has not counted for 10 years now.

That's fuckin retarded to put celebs. I assume you didn't want the job?

Some jobs do contact references, some don't.
It couldn't hurt to send your old prof an email just in case. "Hello Prof X. You might recall allowing me to cite you as a reference on job applications last year. I've just applied for a couple of new jobs, and just in case they contact you, let me remind you of some of the work I did with you . . . . ."
