Is Planet Fitness good if it's the only gym in your area that you can afford?

Looking for a place to get some free weights in.

What do you mean by good? Gyms are just places with a bunch of heavy objects that people lift up and down. If you're starting to work-out, do some body weight exercises and see if you can maintain that for a while. Most people who start working out give up a week or two later.

Planet Fitness is fine for basic physical fitness, cardio, and novice weight lifting. Keep in mind that they have their "lunk alarm" system to make the gym less intimidating, meaning that if you're dropping weights or doing anything that makes you grunt you run the risk of being asked to stop or leave.

Its fine for getting yourself into a routine, and if all you want is cardio and some light weight work for toning you'll be happy. If you eventually get into more serious weight training you'll outgrow Planet Fitness, but if it comes to that you'll likely be in a place where you're willing to either pay more money or expand what you consider to be your area.

They are often extremely dirty. I have video of my local PF with the employee straight up scrubbing the footholds of an elliptical with a Swiffer duster, then scrubbing the panel where you touch. Look around for a local equivalent with heavier weights and a better community where you won't be working out with the kind of people who pay $10 a month to work out. My YMCA is only 30 and has a dedicated freeweight room, a fitness center with cardio and strength machines, two swimming pools, an indoor track, three indoor tennis courts, and a multipurpose facility with basketball, pickleball, etc. The head coach from the local high school works out there and he can go work out for free at the damn high school. Go give it a try.

Planet fitness is repulsive.

Where do you live? What city/state. I can make proper suggestions.

I live in Madison, WI.

Check out Capital Fitness. That's where I'd go if I lived in Madison.

Badger fitness, too. Try to stay away from Anytime Fitness if you can. They overcharge and have a million different hidden fees. I know for a fact they have a maintenance fee they'll charge you like a hundred dollars for around July. It's ridiculous.

Anytime Fitness is a fucking trap, and the corporation won't help you ever. I had a dispute with my local Anytime Fitness and the owner just didn't respond to any emails about it, ever. I had to threaten to sue the corporation because there was no other way before they finally got her to contact me back.

Thats less of a problem if you never use a credit card and are willing to be difficult. You'd be amazed how many businesses are willing to do cash business with someone who refuses to produce an ID. You'd also be amazed just how many hidden fees and little pieces of bullshit go away when a cash customer starts to leave.

At my Anytime Fitness the personal trainer went absolutely mental shaking with rage at me because I complained about the water being brown (I guess they took the filter out of the drinking fountain). This is what I complained about. Fucking psychos, I hope they go out of business.

Are the stories about planet fitness true or is it just /fit/ shitposting?

Like the "lunk alert" if you grunt too loudly, or serving pizza and bagels randomly.

It's true. I've been to a couple locations in Ohio and the second time I went I accidentally dropped a dumbbell (twice) and I was escorted out. Not my fault it would slip off the bench.

Like I said, stay away if you can. Granted Anytime Fitness has a lot more horror stories than Planet Fitness, to me it isn't worth the hassle.
