In this sentence "By this event, millions of Americans knew..."
I am told it should read "From this event". What is wrong with "by"? Why does it have to be "from" instead?

"By this event" doesn't sound like the event caused it, it sounds like millions of Americans knew by the time the event happened.

"As a result of this event" would be more appropriate.

"From" stabilishes the event as a cause for the learning
