>working first job as an actuary at a big consulting firm with over 4,000 total employees around the world
>everything is going well for first 4 months
>Today an IT guy comes to me and says he has been ordered to virus scan and potentially wipe my personal laptop, the one with all my porn and pictures and everything on it
>He scans my laptop and finds like 30 viruses, which are removed but he has to take a picture of the scan to send to his boss
>I'm panicking that I could be fired
>Later today boss sends out a mass email to whole department that we are NOT allowed to connect our personal devices to the office wifi
>FUCK
>Still working
>Get a much long e-mail from someone who is way higher up than my boss saying that a virus which accessed the network through a personal computer today had traveled from node to node into the company's private data and was sending data to Siberia and that the entire company was almost shut down for a week but luckily they believe that have quarantined the problem
>This email was sent to all 4000+ people in the entire company
>mfw I almost shut down a worldwide corporation for a few days

Am I gonna be fired /adv/? I literally had no idea my computer was doing that and I had no idea I wasn't allowed to connect to the company's wifi. I could have sworn they gave me the password to do so.

My boss hasn't spoken about it to me and apart from that email reminding the whole department not to do anything like that, I haven't heard anything.

What should I do/

Yes you will, and you're a fucking retard for using Windows.

Most likely you will get some lawsuit for fucking shit up the whole company as well, you literally fucked your life yourself for being a retard that uses an OS with low security.

But also it's kind of the company's fault for not telling you to use a better OS like Mac or Ubuntu.

I don't know what will happen to you soon, but I hope you get a very good lawyer so the punishment will be less painful for you.

RIP OP.

Also someone should screencap this thread, so it can be a reminder to never use Windows on a professional environment.

What kind of shitty consulting firm lets its employees use their personal computers for work?

lel go back to /g/

Even if they catch you, you usually dont get insta fired with your 1st offence.

Educate yourself on how to not download every boobs.exe file from internet.

I suggest you to separate your work and private life both in life and online. How hard would it be to have two separate devices?
>>
>30 viruses

Holy fuck, learn how to use a computer.
>>
>>18175161
The computers the company provides are all running on Windows. Everything is on Windows. That's absurd.

>>18175162
No see I have a laptop that I sometimes kept open next to my regular work computer so I could google something or check a stock market or something when I have spare time throughout the day.

There is a company WIFI, which I didn't know I wasn't allowed to connect to, so I just opened up my computer wifi like I would anywhere else and connected. Just like I would literally anywhere else. It's not like I accessed company files or anything, just wifi.

>>18175182
It is two separate devices. I just used my personal computer on the company wifi for personal things. Because I rarely actually get any work from the company so I have hours and hours of spare time, so I check stocks, etc., nothing too unusual. I occasionally check 4chan SFW boards and didn't want to do that on a company computer so I did it through my private laptop instead. I thought I was just borrowing Wifi, which didn't seem like a big deal at all.

How was I supposed to know some kind of virus hidden on my machine was going to creep into the company network and start hacking everything?
>>
>>18175182
What should I expect?

Is my boss going to come and talk to me tomorrow? I'll basically just say the truth, that I hooked up my device to the office wifi briefly to google things and didn't realize the danger in doing so, that I'm sorry and it won't happen again.

Should I expect this? Or will he just not say anything at all and I should forget it?

It all happened in like 20 minutes time. A guy just showed up and fixed my computer and left and then I got those emails later but it seems all over now, I hope.

I personally think your boss wont give a shit about it. Be more careful next time.
>>
>>18175086
If you had actually fucked up like that, you'd probably already be gone. The fact that it was a company-wide email and that there were no direct consequences on you means that you were probably not alone. Don't sweat it.
>>
>>18175254
My boss is the kind of person who has spoken to me literally 2 times in the past 4 months so seeing a message from him to our entier department just saying "Reminder that you are not allowed to use personal devices on the office network" was really startling. Everyone here is entirely self-driven. I hope you're right...

Was really embarrassing to see that company wide email though and I just hope my coworkers don't know it's me but at least one probably overheard the IT guy trying to fix my computer. Possibly not though.
>>
I doubt it was just you

Amazing we are so privacy cucked handing over your personal laptop for inspection and possible reformatting doesn't raise a eyebrow.
>>
>>18175339
An IT guy I know came into my cubicle and said "...You computer is being attacked by Siberia. I need to run a virus scan on your machine because it's hacked into our network."

>>18175335
I think it was because they mentioned that it was a personal computer in the email. I just hope nothing bad comes of it.
>>
>>18175161
Don't watch porn and don't go to shady websites. Problem solved. If you can't do that then you're fucking retarded. You're even more retarded for thinking Macs are 100% secure.
