Depends on how often you are home. If you work 8+ hours a day, full time, then you absolutely should not get ANY dog. But you're probably dead set on it, so whatever. Just don't get a super active breed like a collie or lab, or they'll destroy your home while you're gone so much.

Rather than focus on breed, troll your shelters and find an adult dog who doesn't seem to be very hyper. Unless you're home a lot, in which case a hyper dog is fine. But a mature, adult dog with a chill personality is ideal for a working person,

I would say husky but as the other posted said it depends on your work hours. Large dogs need exercise.

If you don't have the time or the will to do that every day then don't get any dog.

Get a mutt from your local rescue! Also, breed choice depends a huge amount on how much you want to train the dog. If you have a lot of time to devote to training, a border collie or husky mix could work. But if not, stay away from those types of dogs! They will get very bored without training, and that can often lead to distractive behaviors. Lab mixes are a pretty safe bet for the 68 to 80 pound range.

Some big dogs, like Great Danes and Newfoundlands, are pretty inactive/couch potatoes and can make great apartment dogs. But active dogs like huskies or Viszclas really should have a lot of space to roam.

For those complaining about getting a dog when someone works 8 hour days, what do i do here?

I got a dog when i lived in a big duplex with a backyard with my bf. It was, to my knowledge, a stable relationship that was likely to last the rest of our lives. We worked different schedules so there was almost always someone home.

Then he left me for another girl, i had to move into a tiny, tiny apartment. My dog is alone most of the day (i take him for a 3 mile walk everyday at least) and has gotten fatter.

I'm attached to my dog and vice versa. What do i do?
