You work on improving the marriage. It's damn near impossible to stay consistently in love for decades, but people who stay married for life make the effort to make it work. If you loved your partner once, it's possible to get there again or at least to make coexistence pleasant and worthwhile. However, if it is genuinely awful, then you just have to man up and tell it how it is. It's fair to neither of you to hang onto a dead marriage, if you could be happy with someone else.

A good marriage counselor could help. But be prepared to face why YOU have failed your wife. When marriages start to break, it's usually not the fault of just one spouse. Both play a part in falling out of love and both need to play a part in putting it back together (if you want).

If there aren't kids, I don't think marriages need to be "worked on" if they're just not working. That's what divorce is for.
