I never really cared about poetry, but I'd like to get into it. What are some essential authors to begin with? What approach and mindset should I take while reading it?

Get a paperback anthology with a title like "100 Great Poems" or "Masterpieces of English Verse" or the like, and browse. If you find a poem you like, note the poet's name and look for more by him/her.
Here's a hint. "Liking" a poem is not a matter of fully understanding it or getting its secret meanings. It is purely a matter of pleasure. You can like a poem for what it sounds like even if you don't "understand" it, or because it makes you feel something.

Got to, thanks. Any suggestion to a non-english native speaker?
