You did the right thing,
Talk to him about it, explain to him what happened and apologize for knocking him out, but yeh. You're friendship might be fucked though, he might not look at you the same way again/ be scared of you a little.

eh. it wasn't the worst option, but if you hit someone hard enough to knock them out its not like in TV where they wake up all fine, it usually means something serious happened. couple that wiht being drunk and you could wake up to find that your friends dead or brain damaged or what have you.
