I have a meeting with my university (Toronto) later today to explain to them why I want to return to the school after leaving a few years to pursue a career in the Canadian Armed Forces.
What should I say? My marks were poor while I was there and I left the military after basic training. I have been working construction and living in neetdom mostly since.
I would like to return to my linguistics program. They're going to ask me:
Why did you leave?
Why do you want to come back?
What would be some understandable answers to these questions?
"I wanted to join the armed forces, and now I want to go back to school"

Just tell them you've grown up. You just weren't ready for university at 18, but you are more mature and more focused now. You know what you want to study, and why, and are confident your old record doesn't indicate the new you.
Believe it or not, universities get dozens of people like you every year, and we generally welcome them with open arms, because we know that not all 18 year olds are ready for the experience and that's not their fault.
