This is totally normal. Eating a large spicy, salty, acidic, or cheesy supper contributes. HR Giger gave himself nightmares by this method to inspire his iconic art!

Even so, all REM phases (your dreaming state) involve highly negative/aversive content. Dr. Domhoff and others have basically proven this is a combined mechanism of memory consolidation and learning that would have been adaptive to pre-verbal organisms. For instance; you see sabre-tooth cat. Fortunately, it doesnt notice you. In your dreams, you prepare repeatedly for situations where it DOES notice you and you have to act.
