Do those teeth whitening gels actually work?
I'm hopelessly ugly and starting to run out of things that I can fix.

Yes, but you get an even better treatment at a dentist that can do it.
Also, you won't go from yellow to white, but more from yellow to a bit less yellowish
The treatments are also hard on the teeth and will destroy them over time

I don't think dentists do that kind of stuff around here. I'd have to get some sort of a specialised cosmetologist or something.
My teeth aren't THAT dark, just whatever smoking coffee and red wine will do, and I don't pretend they could ever get really really white unless I have them knocked out and get dentures instead.
What else would you recommend?

I recommend that you find confidence in yourself
The most epic pussyslayer I knew was not good looking, had pimples, and treated women like shit.
It's all about confidence

girls with daddy issues/trauma about abusive men will fuck anyone who treats them like crap. It's like shooting tame ducks and I don't want that.

The process used for tooth whitening doesn't actually remove staining. To get that off you need either a specially trained dental nurse (dental hygienist) or a dentist.
Bear in mind that it's generally a one-off procedure. To get rid of tobacco and coffee stains they grind a small amount of the enamel off of your teeth to expose the cleaner unstained part below - same principle as when you use cutting compound to polish a scratch out of your car. The thing is that the enamel layer on your teeth is only a fraction of a millimeter thick to start with, so it can't be ground off more than once. It'd be best to pack up smoking and think about how much coffee you drink before getting the work done because if the stain builds up again you're stuck with it for life.

I don't smoke or drink coffee every day, really.
Is there any other way to whiten them? My teeth tilt back so they're always in the shade, so they look darker.
I tried the white strips for awhile and my teeth became sensitive as hell. They did become whiter but never again.
