It is perfectly fine to text someone out of the blue. It's not weird at all.
If you don't want to start with the classic "hey, how are you?" every time, just tell her about something funny that happened to you or a comment about something you've seen/read. Gives a topic to talk about.
If it's the first time you text, a nice "Hey, I'm Anon from X. How are you?" might be the best.
