I'm in a band with 2 other people. We all helped write the music. If I wanted to move on without them, would it be in my best interest to put a copyright on the material? My goal is to try to move forward without the possibility of being sued in the future by the other people who helped write the material. I would want to give them writing credits in some manner, but I don't want them to hinder the future of the project

Well in the US, you don't need to register copyright, it's granted automatically whenever you create something. That means the other two bandmembers also have joint copyright in these songs. Since they helped write the music and already have copyright, there's nothing you can do to protect yourself from being sued except to write your own music. If you want to use the music, then you could have them sign some sort of contract that allows you to, but you'd also have to compensate them for using it.
