I goofed hard, /adv/. I fell for one of those scams where an automated voice tells you your credit card has been locked and you need to input your information on the phone to reactivate it. It was a toll-free number and I gave them my fucking social security number and birth date on top of my credit card info. A friend of mine had to point it out to me that you shouldn't be asked for this info over the phone, that this was a scam and that I basically fucked up. I'm not smart about these things and I realize I'm a retard for falling for this. I don't know why I had such poor judgment.

I going to do everything I can to protect myself; I've asked my credit card company to replace the card, and I'm going to tell SSA what happened and hopefully add some layer of protection involving my SSN. And of course I'm going to be more careful in the future.

My question is, what can they do with this information now besides access my bank account or anything involving money? Can they get into my e-mail or my computer files or something? As you can guess I'm not tech savvy at all. Please don't bully too hard.

They can make fraudulent charges with your credit card. If you cancelled it and reported it then you shouldn't see much happen. Decent banks let you report weird charges and not hold you accountable provided you report them within a few days. Check your bank policy.

The SSN is another matter. Depending on how much info they have on you(and I'm assuming they have the basic stuff) they can potentially open loans and other stuff in your name. A lot of times, these SSN's make their rounds on the black market and end up in the hands of an illegal immigrant posing as a legal. They can report taxes and other stuff under your number and i.e. identity theft which can be a HUGE hassle to deal.

So I work at Geek Squad and we have people come in with your problem every day. If they were quick, they're usually able to avoid any charges to their accounts and that's often the end we hear of it.

If they weren't quick, their cards either get maxed out or their accounts get emptied. In some cases the banks can help them, but in a lot they cant.

Hopefully you were quick in taking care of the cards. As for your identity, information and stuff as long as you gave them only the credit card, they can only do things related to your card, such as open fraudulent things under your name. Once the card is cancelled however they lose all that power.

tl;dr once you gave them nothing other than the card number, such as social insurance/security numbers, you're safe. They basically only know your name and phone number.

Also, they're going to continually call and harass you so change your phone number too.

Hope I helped.

I checked and haven't seen any suspicious activity on my card or bank account, so hopefully I took care of it in time. I'm probably still going to withdraw my money for the time being though cause I'm paranoid. Thank you both!

Additionally, I'd advise that you check your credit report for the next few months just to make sure nothing suspicious pops up.

By law, most credit cards are insured by the companies. The usual terms are thagt you are not responsible for any charges made after you report it, and for no more than a base sum (usually $50) in any case.

Do what is called a "credit freeze" it disallows companies from checking your credit without your permission. This is good because some dude in some far away point can't open a credit card in your name because the card company (or any other company) won't give them any credit without seeing your credit report first

also get a tax id, so no one can steal your tax refund in the years to come
