I like to think I'm a good listener, but I think I just give off the impression I don't like being talked to (untrue). What did you mean by the readings? I imagine they're not books, but rather subjects?

Try listening more often then.
Conversations are like essays. Close them like you would a paper or leave them open and just change topic as need be.

and giving off the impression you don't want to be talked to is a big deal. you should give the impression you're very interested in hearing them talk about themselves.
