how come so many people recommend joining the army to clean up mental problems?
what does the army specifically do to fix peoples brains, or why do people assume the army will fix their brains

depends on mental problems.
but it generally gives you a sense of worth, it gives you a sense of direction, it reminds you of how lucky you have it and that you're working so that other people can have it lucky the way you do.
Constant distraction. No slacking off in basic training. This distraction coupled with the novelty of the situation may very well cure your depression. This also gets you away from your potentially toxic friends, and gets you employment and purpose. Depression in most cases is not a mental illness, it is a natural reaction to a bad situation, fix the situation, do not numb your reaction with pills.
This is super weird because, you know...
if you have diagnosed mental problems, they won't take you.
okay heres the big secret everyone knows but wont tell you. its because you need to spill blood and take life from others to sustain yourself
It's the one widely practiced rite of passage in the west. A fresh identity is forged, you get properly fed, properly exercised and exhausted, you get a proper routine. You share the daily challenges with a perfectly sized tribe.

The only good things are that it gives you a highly structured daily schedule, which helps keep some people focused, and that it gives you a kind of protected escape from the real world.

These sound like good answers (I'm not OP, just another interested anon)
But is this based on your personal experience in the military? Or are you just speculating?

This.
People who have messed up lives usualely find scheduling and structuring their lives difficult, so army does that for them. It offers order without expecting any organisation skills, which fits some people.
