Not true necessarily. I'm being mentored by a consultant with a PhD in Public Policy -- there's definitely a market out there, but mainly for government.

In Canada you'll find that government research positions, advisory jobs to politicians usually require a PhD or a Masters at minimum. Not to mention a lot of experience. So, there's that.

I have a PhD as well (it's in physics, so I may be slightly off). I'm currently a professor (also researcher), but I also used to work at a certain laser making company.

Is the pay on your uni that bad? Where I currently teach (probably not even a top 100 in the world) the pay is quite high, even more than the company I worked. I live alone, so I have quite a bit saved up by now.
