I've been having this problem falling asleep for years, basically whenever I try to fall asleep I get these "phantom itches" basically it feels like its an itch that appears on my skin purely to stop me going to sleep, if I scratch it that wakes me up and another one will soon develope, if I leave it it will either spread to making more itches, or become so unbearable I can't ignore it, wither way I can't go to sleep and it takes me hours every night, I have been going to sleep at a regular time and everything in a completely dark room so I just dont know whats wrong

You might have bedbugs. Wash everything and vacuum and preferably steam clean your whole house. Keep cleaning and washing everything for a few months. New eggs will hatch, the goal is to kill all bugs before they reach sexual maturity, thus killing the entire population.

I wish it was bedbugs, but unfortunately it happens wherever I go, even after moving to a new house with a brand new mattress and brand new sheets

I had similar symptoms and almost a year into it, one night, i suddenly woke up and felt an itch on my arm. I quickly turned around, pressed my hand onto the bed, and stroke it, until i felt a small hard lump, like a breadcrumb. i held it there, switched on the light, and saw a bedbug. I took my glass of water, tossed the water out of it on the floor and put it over the bug. I lifted the sheet around the glass, maneuvering the bug into the glass, and got up. I kept the bug in the glass, got some clear tape from a drawer in the next room, and dumped the bug onto the table. trapped it with some tape and stuck it on a piece of paper. Then I went online and found out from photos what it was. I had no idea i had bedbugs, and it was the only one i ever found.

i know exactly what you mean. I usually get them on my back, shoulders, or face.
they aint bedbugs because they happen everywhere I try to sleep. my bed, friend's house, my couch, my car, etc. I have no idea what it is, so I just try to think of other things.

Same here pretty convinced it had to do with stress but I'm not sure. It only happens when I overthink.

>even after moving to a new house with a brand new mattress and brand new sheets

Yeah this doesnt mean you didnt transfer them. To completely be sure you need to treat your clothing, carpets, drapes, box spring, bed frame, wallpaper, etc...

Not saying you have bed bugs but simply getting a new mattress, new sheets and a new house will not prevent bed bugs from being transferred if you already had them.

I've had this. Particularly when I was trying to train myself to remain absolutely still so I could lucid dream.

The trick is make yourself realize that the more you scratch, the more you stay awake. Acknowledge that the itch is there, but don't stress out about trying to pretend it doesn't exist. Just accept it. Say "hi itch," and then go back to paying attention to your breathing and the backs of your eyelids. Eventually the itch dulls and you forget about it.

I once read something that said to go ahead and scratch the first few itches you feel, just to get them out of the way, and it ruined me. One led to another and it all went downhill.

Also I seem to be more focused on the itches when I am not fully tired or have drank coffee and my brain is too active. If I'm legitimately sleepy, ignoring the itches is easy.

probably dust mites on your arm/leg hairs are too long. or probably its just anxiety. i used to get like that as a kid. it could be an excuse to move because you dont like the bed position?
