hi /adv/
my family's phones have the same 6/10 numbers; the area code plus the middle 3.
today, within an hour, each of us received a call from similar numbers. the area code and middle 3 numbers, then various numbers for the last 4.
none of them were from the family or numbers we recognized, and I was on my commute home so no one was able to answer. we're finding it pretty odd and the younger ones are a little spooked.
would anyone be able to shed some light? my brother and I were thinking spam bots.
a humble bump

It's an auto dialer. Do you even know how telemarketers work?

haven't a clue; they haven't been a thing in my world since the early 2000s caller ID would read "unavailable" and it certainly was never a number close to the one it was calling
will definitely look into it though!
I'd say it's pretty normal.
Could be auto-dial advertising, could be just test if phone number is in use. If the sources were multiple similar numbers it could mean they are simply load-balancing the calls for bigger throughput.
Some service providers perform these tests too, though mine does it from hidden number. You can guess if it was a test when it immediately hangs up - too quick to pick up.
