I don't know about books, but I had a pretty smooth transition. My father left the house on my name so my life wouldn't change much for me. He paid alimoney, and I kept going to private school and living in the same standard, even if he had to sacrifice a lot.

I'm just really glad my dad wasn't a selfish jerk. When I got older, I chose to live with him because I noticed he was making a way bigger sacrifice than my mother who decided my alimoney was the only money she would be spending on me, and skipped buying my medication if school demanded something extra.

You have the right to request a representative at court if it comes to that.
Your opinion matters a lot if the case goes to court and you are free to express it.
Courts are instructed to have the children's best interests in mind. I still suggest you talk to someone who has experience with family law in your country.
Generally the parent that doesn't get full time custody has to support the children financially (to an extent that the child has the same quality of life as the parent paying alimony).

14 but I can read adult books just fine. My parents divorced when I was 5 and I'm only just realising how big the economic impact is (practically broke, renting, one is still single, job not the best, etc.) I figure unless I get some high income job when I grow up I'm screwed.

You can still sue the parent who you're not living with to give you more money.
If you're all pretty poor you won't get anything out of looking back at the past and it certainly won't solve your financial situation.
Focus on the future, try to get a job yourself in a few years (or whenever your country's laws allow you to get a job). Consider taking up a trade if you need money right away instead of getting a degree.

Financial comfort is nice, but living a miserable romantic life isn't worth it. Don't blame your parents for wanting a divorce. And you can't really say the situation woul be much difference economically were they still together.
