how do you truly assess whether or not you are in a relationship that makes you unhappy, or if you're simply the type of person that will never find lasting happiness no matter what path you choose?

If you ask this question, then you're the latter type.

whats the logic behind this answer?

You don't know if a relationship makes you unhappy because that relationship isn't marked by palpable spikes / decreases in unhappiness, which means that unhappiness is your standard state of being and the relationship neither improves it nor makes it worse by a lot.
Pic-related will help u figure it out.

i understand your picture.
but i'd say my situation feels more like a spike upwards at the start of the relationship, but now i am back to being unhappy. the question is, am i back to unhappy because of the relationship or is this my default happiness to which i will always return?
this is the first relationship i've ever had. the underlying decision i have to make is to end it (possibly opening resulting in crushing regret that will haunt me forever) and try and pursue happiness elsewhere or just continue as i am.

then it was just a temporary spike and you're now at an all-time low that will get even lower if you break up
you're the 3rd kind - generally unhappy with tendencies to become even unhappier

why'd you just let this guy talk in overly general terms to you and then tell you you're at an all-time low? he called you famalam
stop conversing with the overtly mentally ill
but there is a good point in there. if unhappiness is your default state, don't blame the relationship. if the relationship makes you noticeably more unhappy, consider ending it.
what's the actual problem here?
