When it says, on various packaged foods such as I don't know, a bag of chips or some sort of seeds or whatever really "May contain traces of gluten, soy, etc." do these things actually contain the gluten or is it basically just some general warning they have to put on everything, like how the stuff that comes with pills lists pretty much every sickness humanity has ever experienced?

I've always wondered about this. For me, it's ok to eat things like those, even if they have that little warning, since I'm not that intolerant to gluten, but I guess it you get a major allergic reaction you might want to avoid them. Treat it as it says on the tin: "it MAY contain..."

Or this, idk.

They put it on there just so they can't get sued. It usually means the food was manufactured in a facility that uses those ingredients in other foods.

This. Depending on how severe the allergy is there can be cross-contamination, but the mentioned thing (eg glutes) is not an actual ingredient in the product, it was just around during the fabrication.
