Honestly this is the way to go, just be nice about it. Just because you're socially awkward now doesn't mean you have to stay that way for the rest of your life. Learn how to talk to people without being awkward. Learn how to express yourself, what people like and dislike to hear and how to act in social situations. Talk to your classmates more, go out, interact with strangers and acquaintances, hit on girls and so on. Yeah, you'll face rejection and many people won't like you, but that's life and you have to learn to live with it.

And yeah, being single is much better than being with a person who makes you unhappy.
