How do I get retail management experience if every job requires prior experience?

Three answers:
1. Get a sales job. Be good at it. Be asked to train a new hire. Hey, presto - you now have retail management experience.
2. Job descriptions are wish lists - the ideal candidate they hope will apply. If he doesn't, they'll pick the best from those who apply, even if they lack one requirement, like experience. So apply for every job you find, even if you don't quite meet the requirements.
3. In your application, cover any gaps. "Though my job title at Target was officially just salesman, I took over many managerial functions for several months when the department head left and a new one was hired. Among them were . . . ." (or something true on those lines)

You usually get promoted into the position if you're semi competent.

Do not become a manager in retail. You have to sell your soul and entire availability to make $10/hr and be responsible for a bunch of bottom feeders who don't give a single fuck about their job.

Ya retail is garbage. They will find ways to fire you also when you have to start at the bottom. The managers job is usually to fire anyone that could somehow take their place. I am serious. So if you have a bachelors they will literally spend days on end finding ways for you to quit or be fired.
They don't care. I don't even know what happens when you get a year of experience anyway but when I got six months I hear a lot of people cussing out loud when they're interviewing me, which means they know I will have enough soon to either be promoted or that they have to give me the job.
Listen to what i'm saying. They literally vent their frustration out loud to me when there is a promotion chance. Do you want to get into this line of work?
